First Solo!

I soloed for the first time today. Below is a picture of the type of airplane I've been flying (in front of my flight school, coincidentally). I might add actual pictures of my flight later (my wife video taped it). Anyway, it was probably one of the coolest things I've done! Flying is fun.

Update: I put up some pictures, including the first one above. You can see them all here (currently need Facebook account).

Here is my first solo landing:

Congrats! Soon you will be dropping bombs on enemies (and probably loudly singing the Star Wars theme while you're doing it, which I applaud). As Erik would say, your parents are so proud. I am too....

Chris-Congrats on the solo! I'm loking forward to being given a ride when you're flying F-16s, 17s, 18s, B-117s, or whatever. Perhaps we can do it once you're flying off aircraft carriers. That would be amazing!

Jed,

I'd give you a ride in whatever aircraft I could. Unfortunately, of the aircraft you mentioned, F-17's don't exist, and all but the F-18 are Air Force. I don't know what I'll end up flying, and am pretty sure that if I did fly fighters that I could take rides, but if the chance makes itself available, I'll bring you up! It's a better chance I'll just get my private's and can fly you then, although certainly not as cool.

Oh. Shows what I know! You should try as hard as possible to fly fighters. I assume the competition is pretty stiff, but I'm sure you can do it!

Yeah, I think I'd like it, but the lifestyle is really hard. It may be kind of difficult to explain the differences in what you fly here on my blog (lots of info), but having a wife (and kids later) makes one want to fly something that is a little more family friendly, like P-3's. Fighters are very competitive, even when you get to fly them. You'll be deployed a lot more, and when you aren't, you'll be gone for weeks at a time doing training. Your main platform of operation is the aircraft carrier, and although it is nicer than a smaller ship, it still kind of sucks to live on. Besides, flying fighters isn't as cool as the movies make it. You mostly fly on station... in circles.

Yea, maybe you do only fly in circles, but it would probably be like driving the batmobile--it's still cool even if you can only do it in a parking lot, knowing there's tons of extra power there.... Plus, jets are more important than families.

That last part was a joke.

To some people it isn't, which is kind of sad.
