Virginia Tech School Shooting

As a disclaimer, I know very, very little about this shooting. I just wanted to ask that you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE not use this for gun control propaganda. Before knowing anything, I can almost guarantee a few things:

1. The gun the student used was illegal and/or illegally purchased.
2. The gun was illegally brought on campus (i.e., Virginia Tech already has laws against bringing firearms on campus).
3. None of the students shot, and no one but police, were armed with firearms.

I don't know if any of these things are true, but I'm already quite sure I'm right. And before the Left uses this for their own politics (they probably already have, I really haven't been following it), I'll use it for mine: if the students had been armed, this would not have happened.

P.S. Feel free to keep commenting on the last few posts... I've been putting a lot up recently.

I'm sure this tragedy will be used for anti-gun ammo (ha ha). I was thinking on the gun issue earlier this week and concluded that the problem lies not with guns but with the evil hearts of men. Murder still occured before guns were invented, so taking away guns is not going to end all violence. In addition, like you said Chris, the guy from Virginia Tech probably got the gun illegally so taking away guns would only leave law-abiding citizens unarmed. Yes, you can use a gun to kill a lot of people in a short time but you can do that with bombs, poison, and biological warfare too. It just irritates me when people tip toe around the actual problem (evil) and set up a straw man (guns) as the source of all grief.

Sam,

You're so intolerant.

uh, you might want to change your position because it looks like it was bought legally. I don't mean your position on the 1st amendment, but the assumption it was bought illegally. I have a feeling this incident is going to change a lot of things.

Well, apparently the serial numbers were shaved off... we'll wait and see. I was right about the Virginia Tech anti-gun laws, though.

You're so intolerant, too (that's a compliment, by the way).

Chris,

The three points you make are true, according to what I've heard. The serial numbers on the guns were actually scratched off, so the guns he used were most likely illegally obtained. Coincidentally, the Virginia Legislature failed to pass a conceal and carry bill, which came before them last legislative session. Isn't it coincidetal how so many of these shootings take place in "gun free zones," such as Virginia Tech? Further gun control measures must be strongly discouraged. The more guns that are in the hands of law abiding citizens the better. But because the left opposes common sense, more people will needlessly die in the future in scenarios like this.

Wikipedia article on the shooter.

Apparently both guns were bought legally.

Check out the below link to read about an extraordinary man, and Holocaust survivor no less, who gave his life protecting others at Virginia Tech.

Wikipedia is not a reliable news source, but I'll check up on it. As with many things of this nature, if first reports are that the gun was bought legally, the media will jump on that. If this is, then, proved wrong, the media will barely mention that. If, on the other hand, the initial reports were that it was illegal, the media would make little mention, then if it became known they were legal, the media would jump all over it. It's a propaganda game.

...

Now after reading it, all Wikipedia mentions is that the serial numbers were filed off. I may be wrong, but I believe this makes the guns illegal, especially if they were purchased that way.

Jed,

That's a touching story. The man has suffered much evil. I'm glad he did good in its face.

Probably like some others out there - I am trying hard to avoid listening to this story. I figure I will give it a week and then get a summary after the speculation has slowed a bit. I was thinking the same thing as you Chris. It's unfortunate that this will be turned into politics. After gun laws it will probably be violence on TV, mean athletes....then some psychos will go out and kill a couple Asian kids. Hopefully none of this happens.

Yes, the Asians must be protected. We are in agreement there... or maybe they are to be blamed? I mean, after all, this guy was Korean. That's a kind of Asian. Also, weren't the 9-11 terrorists from Asia? Yes, it must just be Asians. It couldn't have been one really messed up kid whose heart was captured by evil, and probably demonic forces, and went crazy. No, then there wouldn't be any blame to throw around. We must always have something politically related to blame.

Also, I'm in agreement that I don't want to hear about it. I watched a little news last night, but now I try to avoid it. I'd rather just hear a summary in a week or so, but don't want the news to be drawn out. In all honesty, I'll pray for the families, but it doesn't really affect me...

Chris,

Speaking of assigning blame, there was a Democratic Congressman, whose name escapes me, who actually blamed Republican policies and Bush for the shooting. If we're going to start blaming outside actors for the shooting, than the Democrats and the left should apologize. After all, it is they who are largely responsible for the twenty five thousand or so gun laws that are on the books in this country. And yet, all twenty five thousand failed to stop this act.

I can' tbelieve it! If I were speaking you probably never would have known! Well once I have several silo-sized aerosol cans I will flex my muscles a little and change both "it's" and "its" to itz.

I am an Australian and we are
dumbstruck at how idiotic some
Americans thought processes are.

If the students had more guns less
people would have died.

Huh ?

Then it would just happen more often you F*CKI*G IDIOTS !

Anonymous,

Thanks for finding my blog. I guess I have an international audience.

Your argument has no scientific data whatsoever to back itself up. It's just simply not true. More access to guns (and more guns themselves) do not create more crime. The areas of the US where guns are most easily accessed and where it is perfectly legal to carry concealed weapons are not the places where this stuff happens. It usually happens in areas where carrying guns are illegal and where there are many restrictions on buying them.

I'm sorry, but the facts prove you are wrong. Even your own country has been hurt crime-wise by confiscating guns.

If students had been allowed to carry concealed guns (and some had concealed guns with them), this would not have happened to the extent it did. It would not increase the frequency or severity of school shootings. I firmly believe, from both a statistical and logical standpoint, that I am right in this.
