Shaving

I've always been good with personal grooming. Shaving wasn't really a problem until the last year or so. As it turns out, I cut myself... all the time. If I don't cut myself, I get rashes or I end up not shaving close enough. Here is a typical shave for me:

Note the obvious darkened area above the upper lip. That's not from not shaving close enough, but rather from having to go over the same spot 10 or so times in order to actually shave everything.

The thing is that if I wait a couple days between shaving, I get a good shave:

Now before you tell me about different razors or creams, I've experimented a lot. I use and recommend Gillette's Sensor Excel with their Sensitive Skin shaving gel. It has worked the best for me by far.

I used to use an electric razor, but it doesn't work for me anymore. I think that's cause I'm getting older and my facial hair is finally starting to get thicker. That's good cause I'm starting to get gray hair too. However, I don't think my facial hair grows fast enough for me to have enough stubble to effectively cut everyday. Thus, I have to go over the same spot multiple times and apply pressure, otherwise nothing will be cut. However, this causes rashes.

Anyway, I would appreciate any advice.

Electric razors never work as well as the others. I don't have advice, but I feel your pain. It's the same problem for girls when it comes to their legs...can't get a close shave unless it stubs out to a certain point.
Let me know if you solve this age-old problem.

some people say exfoliating helps. and a really fresh, sharp razor.

i have a feeling that as time goes on, your skin gets more and more used to being shaved, and eventually, the cuts & nicks just won't happen. this is based on no scientific evidence whatsoever, just an observation that my dad usually has a pretty close shave and rarely has cuts - but i can't imagine it's always been that way.

oh, and a good moisturizer or aftershave might help. if i don't lotion my legs after i shave, they freak out.

Isn't there a razor that has like 5 blades in it? Or maybe that's the one you use? That razor is supposed to be good. Warm water opens up your pores so you can get a closer shave. They should invent a device like a giant electric pencil sharpener that a person can stick a face, leg, etc. into and *botta bing* clean shave w/o razor burn. Someday...

I do use aftershave balm, which seems to help. I also shave with warm water after I shower (pores are open, then), and wash with cold water to close the pores.

The issue is not my skin "getting used" to the shave, although I have heard that before. I say this because I have shaved for years without this problem, and the fact that the LESS frequently I shave, the less problems I have.

I'll certainly let you know, Chen, if I solve this problem.

Sam,

That would be a wonderful invention! I've tried the 3-5 blade razors, but they really don't work as well. I think that that many blades going over the same area back to back makes it worse. I've also tried a single blade. That doesn't work either cause I have to push hard. The razor I'm using now seems to be the absolute best. I do get better results with new blades, but I already change at least once/week. If I change more frequently, it just gets too expensive.

I was going to make a joke about your mom involving mustaches but decided it was inappropriate.

I think the solution for now is to shave every other day.

I can't shave every other day cause I have to go to work in uniform, which requires a fresh shave.

By the way, if you had said something about my mom and mustaches, I would have said something back about your mom and mustaches and beards and everything, but I won't cause you didn't say anything first.

Brett tipped me to your blog today... he's a big liberal and is probobly going to hell. That's o.k., becuase, after all I am "Damn" the eternally condemned one.

say, I'm on a mission from God... I'm getting the band back together. Bayless is moving back in two weeks.

On another note, your bachelor party plans are moving ahead nicely. The Horse and Hunt club chages $22.00 for their Sporting Clay course. They rent guns ~ $10.00 per gun, but said we could share so figure 5 per person. That makes that portion of the party about $30.00. Including beer, grilling out at my place and prizes, do you think most people could swing a $50.00 price tag for your party?

Damn,

Hey dude. I'll just respond to you here. I think people could pay that. I don't see why not. Not everyone would be in on the beer part, so maybe have those who want to stay later for beer pay for that portion? I don't plan to drink much until later anyway.

Dammit,
Kick
